Heartland Lost Ty, Then Kept Going the Way Real Families Do

When Ty Borden died in 2021, it knocked the wind out of every fan. Twenty seasons in, the show still hasn't pretended that loss away, and that's a big part of why we're still watching.

When Ty Borden died, it honestly felt like someone knocked the wind right out of every Heartland fan.

It happened in the first few minutes of the Season 14 premiere, “Keep Me in Your Heart,” which aired on CBC on January 10, 2021. Ty had taken a bullet in the Season 13 finale, and he seemed to be on the mend. Then he collapsed. A blood clot nobody had caught, a complication from that gunshot wound, and he was gone. Just like that, Amy lost her husband, Lyndy lost her dad, and fans had to say goodbye to a guy we’d watched grow up for 14 seasons.

The show kept going. But nothing on the ranch felt quite the same after that.

The kid who showed up with nothing

Ty wasn’t just Amy’s first love turned husband. When he rolled into Heartland in the very first episode in 2007, he was a rough-around-the-edges teenager on probation, sent to the ranch as a hired hand with nowhere else to go. Jack nearly sent him packing after his first night. He stayed.

Season after season, we watched him find a real home. He cleaned up his act, became a vet and turned into the kind of father who’d do anything for his little girl. Losing him didn’t feel like a regular TV plot twist. It felt like losing someone you actually knew.

A funny bit of history: Ty was first written as a smoker. Graham Wardle, who doesn’t smoke, bought a pack of cigarettes for his audition anyway, then gave it away in the waiting room. He tells that story in CBC’s oral history of the show. He also admitted he had to ask what a TV pilot even was when he got the part.

Why Graham walked away

The exit wasn’t sudden behind the scenes. About two years before that premiere, Graham picked up the phone and called his co-star first. “He wanted to let me know before he told anybody else,” Amber Marshall told the Calgary Herald in 2021. “And I was hurt. When he first told me, it stung a little bit. But then, as I had time to process it, I understood it.”

Graham kept his own explanation short. “I felt in my heart it was time to move in a new direction,” he told The Canadian Press by email. He’d started a podcast called Time Has Come and wanted to follow where it led.

Once he’d made up his mind, the writers had a real problem. Ty had already been sent off to Mongolia once, back when Graham asked for time away. A quick divorce or another long trip wasn’t going to work for Amy and Ty. So the show did the hardest thing.

Amber grew up right beside Amy

One big reason Heartland works is Amber Marshall. You rarely see an actor fit a character so naturally.

She was 19 when she started playing Amy, and she’d been riding since she was five. Over nearly twenty years, we didn’t just watch Amy grow up. We watched Amber do it too. She moved to Alberta during the second season, and today she lives on a ranch of her own just outside Calgary, with horses, cows and a few foster dogs. “This is home for me,” she says. When she works with a horse on screen, she isn’t faking it. She knows what she’s doing.

Carrying the show without Graham wasn’t an easy spot to be in. Plenty of fans were heartbroken, and some said online that they didn’t want to watch anymore. Amber understood. She’d spent all those years building that couple alongside him, often in scenes with just the two of them.

She also took Amy’s grief seriously. To get it right, she talked with the sister of a friend who had lost her husband young. That woman had spent the whole first year after his death numb, “in this daze,” as Amber put it. So when Season 14 picked up a year after Ty died, Amy was only just starting to feel it.

That year-long jump almost didn’t happen. The scripts were first written to pick up six months later, but the pandemic pushed filming from April to September 2020. Amber told TV, eh? it made Ty’s memorial on the one-year anniversary “so much stronger.”

Still, Amy’s story couldn’t just stop. She had Lyndy to look after, a family counting on her and problem horses that still needed a gentle hand. Her world fell apart, but life didn’t pause.

Why Heartland has lasted

Heartland has never been about car chases or over-the-top drama. It’s always been about the small, everyday stuff: Jack giving quiet advice on the porch, a family dinner where people actually talk, somebody fixing a fence after bad weather.

The series takes its time. A traumatized horse doesn’t get cured in one afternoon. A hurting family doesn’t fix things over a single cup of coffee. And real grief doesn’t just vanish when a new season starts.

That steady pace is why people keep coming back. Life throws hard things at these characters, but morning comes, chores still have to get done, and people lean on each other.

Longtime showrunner Heather Conkie once said the show’s audience runs “from two to 92,” and you can see it. Amber has met fans who were babies when Heartland began and grew up watching it. If you still miss Amy and Ty, our look back at their best moments together is a good place to start.

Twenty seasons in

Heartland’s 20th season is here. It premiered in Canada on October 4, and new episodes air Sunday nights on CBC and stream on CBC Gem. Viewers in the U.S. get it on November 19, when it arrives on UP Faith & Family.

It’s wild to think about how long this family has been in our living rooms.

You can still feel Ty’s absence in those quiet moments by the barn. That will never completely go away, and it shouldn’t. But Amy isn’t stuck in place anymore. She’s raising her daughter, riding across the Alberta hills, and this season she’s facing a big decision about her future with Nathan. She’s finding joy again.

Maybe that’s the real reason Heartland has lasted so long. It doesn’t pretend loss can be forgotten. It just shows us that, somehow, life goes on.

I have never watched a movie that has produced such a warm and family atmosphere, we see enough of the profanity and scanty dressed characters and it is such a treat to watch the staff of Heartland. Heartland and Amy and TY have filled a very big void in my life with the loosing of my beautiful wife to cancer at a young age. The relationship between TY and Amy is so true and the portrayal of true love displayed by Ty and Amy is so natural and true love. I feel that the departure of TY was a very big mistake and I realize it is said that it was his choice but I still feel it done a lot of damage to Heartland. The show has turned into a soap opera with poor Amy having to deal with other male actors who just do not fit with Amy. I would of rather see Amy raise their child as a single mother than damage her beautiful performance with the previous series and episodes.

What do I say is I am so proud to have gotten to know the characters TY and Amy and what they stood for in the episodes prior to TY leaving. The show will never be the same unless TY and Amy reunite as husband and wife and raises their beautiful family. The show where Ty told Amy he could live on his own , but he did not want to do that he wanted to live and be with Amy was a wonderful performance. The other show was when they got married, you will never know how many hearts and lives you touched. I am sorry but I have stopped watching the show since TY has left and not that I don’t love Amy , but I just could not see what was happening to Amy. If I could find out if they get back together in series 18 I would be back in a heartbeat, I love you all and especially Amy and TY. God Bless A very loyal fan Denny.

Well said! Thank you for sharing. I feel the same way. The family and Amber, love them all! When Graham left it left a big hole in the show. But again Amber show her strength and character trying to continue Heartland. I love that person Amber. My humble statement,”Graham should not have never left. His broadcasting does not reflect the goodness he depicted on family members love across the world. PawT

I find it interesting how she indicates one difference between her Wardle but nothing said about commonalitie. Their were stark differences in the backgrounds of my wife and I but here we are…..44 yrs strong. I came her way some and she came mine. To this day, she does her things, I support her and I do mine and she supports me and we occasionally participate in each other’s interests. Those common things is what binds us. True love will always win if you let it. Sounds like she didn’t and that most likely was the root of Wardle’s departure. Outside of that, why would they completely cut off (or kill off) the very best of Heartland from the possibility of a reunion? We will never know those truest of feelings from either of them. Those feelings were revealed on the show. It couldn’t be that good and not be real. Don’t get me wrong, they are good at acting but they couldn’t act their way out of what really was there. She made a choice, he was left with no choice. Wardle left.

As many have said, it was hard when Ty left. For a season or so, sadness is fine. But I felt we lost Amy and her horsemanship too. Starting trying to find another love interest for Amy instead of going backbto her root’s..
Lou keeps getting annoying. And we keep losing our other young lady riders. Its hard to stay up to date with seasons the way they’ve been put on TV. And because its become so confusing, I’m losing interest. One of the very few programs where the star “Amy” could ACTUALLY ” really ride. Very refreshing. Sad I rarely get to see anything new anymore. And if I do, I missed enough thatvi don’t know who people are.

I love heartland because of the emotions it leaves me with., I think Amy and Nathan should get married and have twin boys, who are completely different. Also Lyndy should be in an accident and end up in a wheelchair and after over come being paralyzed from the waist down, but learning how to walk and ride horses again!

Perhaps I am among your “more seasoned” viewers at the tender age of 94 – but I, too, love animals and if it were ever possible, I would love to visit Canada. The setting of Heartland is breathtaking. Please keep it going. I binge watch when I can get it, Which season is it just after Ty dies? That is where I am at.

I fell in love with Heartland show because of what I saw between Amy and Ty, however I recognize the whole show had to encompass any other characters if it was going to survive. None of us live in an isolated world. There are many facets to all of life. I could see that Graham easily became bored and was always looking for new adventure. I expect that’s how the story in Mongolia came to be. However after Graham left Heartland I’ve come to believe that Graham is searching for something he himself has not found even now. I’d like to think so but time will tell. Graham has to be challenged! Near death experiences seems to be his fate. That’s probably what sets him apart from all the other characters….he can’t be satisfied. His love and relationship with Amy satisfies him but he thinks there must be more to life than just finding a perfect soulmate. Because Amy is perfect for him. She allows him to be him but there are times she feels excluded. She wants all of him even now, no holding back. What new episodes will bring will be interesting to say the least.

I love Heartland up to Season 13! After that, simply lost its flavor! Season 14 was a struggle to watch and I cried through the whole thing!
So I go back to the beginning ♥️
