Fans know Amber Marshall as Amy Fleming, the horse-loving ranch girl at the center of Heartland. But when Amber married photographer Shawn Turner on July 27, 2013, there was no television script involved.
There almost could have been.
The couple married at their ranch near High River, Alberta, surrounded by open pasture, wooden fences, horses and the same Alberta countryside that has become so closely associated with Heartland.
It wasn’t a destination wedding designed to look country. Amber and Shawn were already living that life.
Speaking about their decision to marry at home, Amber told HELLO! Canada that both she and Shawn were homebodies and knew right away that their ranch was where they wanted the wedding.
They planned much of the day themselves, with help from family and friends. Shawn even built the wooden altar for the ceremony and carved their names into it. Amber later called it one of the most beautiful keepsakes from their wedding. Accounts of the ceremony have preserved many of those details from the original HELLO! feature.
It wasn’t a theme wedding.
It was their life.
Amber arrived the only way that made sense

There was no traditional walk down a long church aisle.
Amber arrived on horseback.
Wearing a strapless wedding gown and carrying a lilac bouquet made by her grandmother, she rode her horse Hawk toward the ceremony while her father walked beside her holding the reins.
For anyone who had spent years watching Amy Fleming ride across the Bartlett-Fleming ranch, the scene was almost surreal.
Except this time, Amber wasn’t playing Amy.
The connection between Amber and her television character has always gone deeper than horses being part of both of their lives. Amber has spoken for years about her love of horses, animals and ranch life, and she has built a life of her own around them in Alberta.
So putting Hawk at the center of her wedding wasn’t something added because it would make a beautiful photograph.
He belonged there.
Familiar faces in the crowd
The similarities to Heartland didn’t stop with the scenery.
Members of Amber’s Heartland family joined her for the day, including Michelle Morgan and Chris Potter. Alisha Newton was also there and was later seen in footage from the wedding.
Chris, who plays Amy’s father Tim Fleming, even joined in the wedding speeches.
That part of the celebration says something about the relationships built behind the scenes of the series.
After years of long filming days together in Alberta, the people surrounding Amber weren’t simply coworkers showing up for an industry event. Many had become part of her life away from the cameras as well.
It wasn’t Amy Fleming’s wedding.
But looking at the photographs, it’s easy to understand why Heartland fans sometimes have to remind themselves of that.
The reception stayed country too
The wedding didn’t suddenly turn into a glossy celebrity event once the ceremony was over.
Guests celebrated under a large white tent, and the dress code kept things comfortable and Western.
There was even another quiet Heartland connection behind the scenes: the reception food was prepared by caterers who also worked on the series.
Amber and Shawn chose “Timing Is Everything,” performed by Garrett Hedlund in Country Strong, for their first dance.
It all fit the same pattern.
Nothing about the wedding seemed built around making Amber look like a television star. The details reflected the people getting married: horses, family, friends and the Alberta countryside.
A Western send-off

Then came perhaps the most Heartland-looking moment of the entire day.
After exchanging vows and sharing their first kiss as husband and wife, Amber and Shawn climbed onto their horses and rode away from the ceremony.
Amber was on Hawk.
No limousine waiting at the edge of the property. No elaborate celebrity exit.
Just the newlyweds riding away on horseback.
Amber later joked that the applause made the horses nervous, so their exit became faster than planned. Contemporary coverage also quoted her describing how the couple mounted up after the ceremony and “rode off into the sunset.”
It probably couldn’t have been planned better if someone had written it for television.
The wedding reflected the life Amber was already building
What makes these wedding photographs so striking years later isn’t simply how closely they resemble scenes from Heartland.
It’s why they resemble them.
Amber wasn’t trying to recreate Amy Fleming’s world for one day. Horses, ranch life, Alberta and the outdoors were already part of her world.
That overlap is one reason Amber has always felt unusually believable as Amy.
She isn’t Amy Fleming, of course. But when the cameras stop rolling, Amber doesn’t immediately leave horses and country life behind for a completely different existence.
Those things matter to her too.
And her wedding may be one of the clearest examples.
There were no Bartletts or Flemings standing around the altar. There was no director waiting to call cut.
But there was Amber on Hawk, her father beside her, Shawn waiting at an altar he’d built himself, Heartland friends in the crowd and the Alberta landscape stretching out behind them.
Then the ceremony ended and the couple rode away together.
For once, real life didn’t imitate Heartland.
It just happened to look a lot like it.
