Mark Harmon Got Bored in Retirement. Faster Than He Probably Expected

He thought he was done playing Gibbs. Turns out, retirement wasn't as satisfying as he'd hoped.

Let's be real about the "fading into the sunset" idea: retirement is hard for people who were good at their jobs and knew it. Mark Harmon spent 18 years as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. He left NCIS in 2021, probably with a plan, and that plan — according to a source speaking to Closer — lasted maybe a year before it went bad.

"He got bored," the source said. "He missed the crew, the rhythm, the energy."

It's a completely predictable character detail, but it fits perfectly.

Harmon filled the gap with the intense focus of a serious drama's main actor. He co-wrote Ghosts of Honolulu, a World War II book developed with real NCIS agent Leon Carroll Jr. He stayed home. He probably walked his own dog without studio help. But staying home eventually lost its appeal.

He came back not because of a big offer or a studio executive's promises. It was the franchise's new show, NCIS: Origins — a prequel about a young Gibbs — where Harmon narrated and appeared on screen at least once. It was basically a guest appearance, but it worked. "Working on Origins reminded him how much he enjoyed it," the insider said. "It made him realize he wasn't done."

He's 73. He won't be running operations or questioning suspects for three episodes straight. Nobody expects that, and from what sources say, neither does he. He's basically asking for the ultimate Hollywood veteran perk: to be near the work, on his own terms.

The studio, knowing where their syndication money comes from, made his return easy. Personal masseuse, dog walker, espresso setup on set. Pure diva behavior? Maybe, until you remember they're bringing back the guy who is NCIS to many viewers — a little comfort is cheap compared to the good feelings he brings.

The other important story here is his son. Sean Harmon, who played young Gibbs in flashback scenes in the original series, now produces Origins. So Mark Harmon isn't just going back to a show he helped build — he's working with his son on it. That changes everything. This isn't a desperate attempt to make money from an old show; it's practically a family business, which sounds like the perfect idea for a different network drama.

Pam Dawber and their sons reportedly support it. No strict schedule, no network demands, no expectations of a full return.

Honestly? I like this part of his life. You don't always need a high-stakes, intense reboot. Sometimes boredom is the whole story — you get restless, you find your way back to something that mattered, you do it differently this time. Harmon looks like a man who figured out what he actually wanted before anyone had to step in. In this industry, writing your own character's story without network interference is the best move.

I do miss him in the original NCIS. But, at 73, Mr. Harmon deserves to do what he wants to do. I love hearing his voice in NCIS: Origins.
