Heartland premiered on CBC in October 2007. It was meant to be a quiet family show about a ranch in rural Alberta. Now, after 19 seasons and more than 230 episodes, it is the longest-running one-hour drama in Canadian TV history.
Nobody saw that coming — not the producers, not the network, and definitely not the cast. But somewhere along the way, watching the actors grow up alongside their characters became the real draw of the show.
Amber Marshall was 19 when she started as 15-year-old Amy Fleming. Now 36, she’s spent almost half her life playing Amy. The show rested on her shoulders from day one. Amy was good with horses and honest with her feelings in a way the adults around her struggled to be—and Marshall carried that responsibility easily. By Season 10, she was no longer pretending to be younger. She had caught up.

Off-screen, Marshall built a life that looks a lot like her character’s—a ranch, horses, and a quiet routine away from the TV business. By Season 8, actor and character had blended together, and the show was better for it.
Shaun Johnston had the opposite problem. He was 49 when he put on Jack Bartlett’s cowboy hat, playing a man in his mid-sixties. He’s 65 now and has finally reached the age his character always was. For over a decade, the show asked him to play wise and weathered before he actually got there. He pulled it off because Jack’s authority never really came from his age — it came from how much he cared about his family and doing what was right.

Graham Wardle leaving after Season 14 was the biggest shock the show has ever had. Ty Borden’s death wasn’t a ratings stunt. It was a real risk. Ty had been at the center of the story with Amy since episode one.
Wardle was 21 when he joined, playing a troubled teenager. Over 14 seasons, viewers watched Ty get older, get married, and become a father. When Wardle walked away at 35, he left a real hole. The show didn’t try to replace him. It just figured out how to keep going without him.

Alisha Newton joined in Season 6 as 11-year-old Georgie. She was immediately one of the funniest young actors on the show. She stayed through Season 15, growing up on screen into a 21-year-old show jumper with some genuinely heavy storylines. Today, Newton is pursuing music. It makes sense — she spent her entire teenage years on a TV set, and at some point you want to figure out who you are away from that.

Jessica Amlee was 12 when she started playing Mallory, the same age as the character. Mallory was always a bit of a side role, which gave Amlee room to have fun with it without carrying the main story. She works in film now and mentors young actors who are just starting out the same way she did.
Michelle Morgan and Lou Fleming actually share a birthday: July 16. Morgan was 26 when the show began, playing a 25-year-old. She got Lou’s mix of big ambitions and messy choices exactly right. Lou always wanted to leave the ranch but could never quite do it. Morgan played that tension without ever making Lou look weak. At 43, she’s still on the show — which means she’s spent more than a third of her life playing the same person.

Other familiar faces have hung around too. Chris Potter came back as Tim Fleming with a softer edge than the character used to have.

Jessica Steen returned in Season 17 as Lisa Stillman, and the show actually gave her a real storyline this time instead of just a cameo. And Kerry James, who played Caleb for years, now works full-time as a horse trainer. Spending a decade around horses will do that to you.

Season 20 comes out this fall. The kids who joined the show are turning 30, and the adults are reaching the ages their characters were when it all started. Time on Heartland moves at its own pace. After 19 seasons, the cast hasn’t just grown older on TV—the actors and their characters have simply grown together.

My favourite people on heartland is Georgie and TY please bring them back
I agree totally. I think that it’s because they were troubled kids and to watch them grow into mature successful adults kind of fits my life story.
Georgie is my fav!
I have watched this show 6 times in the last year.
Adjust, I’m trying to TV on or not. Just go straight to Heartland.
Love this show love the characters search a heart warming show. It’s really helped my grief. I’m losing my daughter 4 years ago in June. Set 3 boys and this show has helped me with my grief.
I love Heartland.
When time died no season I turned it off. I couldn’t even watch it for a week at 12 me up. I’m 71 years old.
I found Heartland in 2021 and couldn’t believe I didn’t know about it sooner. I have watched every season several times, waiting on 19. Love everyone, especially Amy, Jack, Tim, Kaleb, Lisa, Peter. Everyone makes the show what it is! GREAT! No other series can compare to writers, directors and actors!
Heartland is one of the best family shows that I have seen in a long, long time. It is so hard to believe that some or just about all the young cast members have grown up from teenagers into Adulthood. Back in the day, we had numerous family shows on the air such as: Little House on the Prairie, Different Strokes, The Waltons, The Cosby Show, The Brady Bunch, The Andy Griffith Show One Day At A Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Happy Days, Leave It To Beaver, All In The Family, Family Ties and Full House to name a few. Why is that? I miss the family shows and I wish that the writers and producers could bring them back, better yet create new ones like Heartland. When HL first debuted in 2007, the cast and crew barely knew each other and look at them now, two decades later in 2025, they have become a family. This is what the world needs now, more family shows like Heartland. We need more characters and love stories ike Ty and Amy. They were the heart of the show and I hope that the actors and crew continue to bring us even more content and beautiful stories. ❤️
You are so right. I felt so bad for the both of them because of what they had to go through at such young ages. Amy’s mother saw in Ty what she knew that Amy would see. I think she chose Ty for her. They were both damaged by their fathers at such young ages and she knew that they would help each other. I am amazed at how both of their lives changed for the better. I am so proud of the adults they became and the family they made. Both Ty and Amy are great parents and Lyndy is a lucky little girl.
It sure would be nice if fans in the US could see all the seasons. We can’t see past season 15. 😪
I ❤️ the show and I want it to keep on going because I which it all the time when I can
