The text had gone unanswered, and Ziva David was starting to wonder whether she could go home at all.
This was in January 2020, in the NCIS episode “In the Wind.” She had spent years letting the world think she was dead so her family would be safe. Now the danger was over. She had told Tony it was safe, and he hadn’t written back.
Then her phone lit up. It wasn’t a text. It was a video of their daughter, Tali, asking her mother to come home.
Gibbs told her that was proof she was ready. The team said goodbye, and Ziva left for Paris.
For a long time, that was where fans pictured her: in Paris, at home, finally done waiting.
Now the family has moved again. So where is Ziva on NCIS? She’s in the Boston area, near Tali’s boarding school, working at a language institute, while Tony runs NCIS in Washington. Cote de Pablo isn’t appearing in Season 24, and neither is Isla Gie as Tali. For now, Ziva is a voice on the phone, a couple of hours away.
A Character Fans Learned to Miss
Missing Ziva is nothing new for NCIS fans.
She first walked away in 2013, when Cote de Pablo left the show early in Season 11. Tony flew to Israel to find her, they finally kissed, and he came home without her. Three years later, in the Season 13 finale, “Family First,” word came that she had been killed. In the same episode, Tony learned he had a daughter, and he left NCIS to raise Tali.
Then, at the end of Season 16, Ziva was standing in Gibbs’s basement, alive, warning him that he was in danger. She had faked her death to keep her family safe from an old enemy.
Loving people from a distance has been a big part of her story.
The Happily Ever After They Finally Got
When NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiered on Paramount+ in September 2025, it felt like the reward for all that waiting. Ten episodes, Tony and Ziva on the run across Europe, Tali in danger, and in the end a family that made it out together.
The finale ended softly. They told Tali they wanted to start dating again, and she gave them her blessing. Ziva gave Tony a photo of Tali with his late friend Henry, they kissed, and that is where the story stopped. Paramount+ canceled it in December 2025.
Weatherly and de Pablo said goodbye together in a joint statement. They thanked “the fans around the world who joined us on this adventure and finally got to see Tony and Ziva find their happily ever after.”
That word, finally, carried a lot of years.
Tony Came Back Alone
Six months later, CBS announced that Weatherly was coming back to the flagship show. CBS declined to comment on de Pablo.
Showrunner Steven D. Binder gave the real answer later that summer. Tali has come to the United States for boarding school, and Tony moved to D.C. “so he can be closer to his daughter.” “They’re off a couple hours away,” he told TVLine. “The way we address it is Ziva’s hanging out in the town where her daughter is, doing a little helicopter parenting, and Tony’s helicopter parenting in D.C.”
So the two of them are still on the same team. They just aren’t in the same city.
Tony didn’t come back to sit at his old desk, either. By the end of the Season 24 premiere, he was the director of NCIS, and a week later McGee finally got to call him “probie”.
She’s There in the Small Things
The show hasn’t pretended Ziva doesn’t exist. In “Wayward Son,” Tony filled the team in on where his family had landed: Ziva at a language institute in the Boston area, Tali at boarding school nearby.
In “Clean Slate,” Ziva did something even more like her. She called Knight to make sure Tony wasn’t eating donuts and enlisted her to keep him on his diet. She has never needed to be in the room to keep an eye on Tony.
That is the version Binder promised. “Loving each other was never an issue,” he told TV Insider. “The problem has always been, can they be together without killing each other? And that’s the question that still needs to be answered.” Whether Ziva’s path crosses with the agents in D.C., he said, “is still an ongoing question — but rest assured, her presence will definitely be felt!”
He has also explained why the show rarely follows its agents home. “We don’t really go home with these people,” Binder told EW. “Those are special episodes when they do.”
Why the Distance Feels So Familiar
Hearing all this, it’s easy to feel the old ache again. Fans spent years wanting Tony and Ziva in the same place, and when they finally got there, the show that put them together ended after one season.
Still, there’s a difference this time. In 2013 she stayed behind in Israel, and in 2016 she let the team believe she was gone. This time she’s a couple of hours from Tony, keeping an eye on their daughter and keeping him off donuts.
Weatherly has hinted there is more to learn about the last year. Fans will come to understand “where they are and why they are where they are and the changes that have happened in the last year,” he said of Tali and Ziva. He wouldn’t say more. “All of those are surprises that I can’t reveal,” he added.
That isn’t a promise that she’ll walk through the bullpen doors. Nobody at CBS has made that promise, and it would be unfair to pretend they have.
But anyone who has followed Ziva since 2005 knows how she works. Being somewhere else has never meant she was gone.
In 2020, a little girl recorded a video asking her mom to come home, and Ziva went.
This time the whole family has crossed the ocean, and she’s still close enough to call.
