When Graham Wardle decided to leave Heartland, the show didn’t give his character, Ty Borden, an easy or dramatic Hollywood farewell. Instead, they delivered one of the most shocking moments in the series’ history.
In the Season 13 finale, Ty and Amy were accidentally shot by a stray bullet. Fans spent months waiting for Season 14, believing both characters were going to be fine. But right at the start of the Season 14 premiere, Ty suddenly collapsed and died from a blood clot complication.
There was no long goodbye, no emotional hospital speech, and no warning. He was simply gone. That sudden loss hit viewers hard—especially after watching Ty and Amy grow from teenagers in love to married parents over more than a decade.
Why Did Graham Wardle Leave?
Graham’s exit wasn’t caused by backstage drama or problems with the cast. He simply felt ready for a new chapter in his personal life.
In a 2020 interview with The Chronicle Journal, Graham explained: “I felt in my heart it was time to move in a new direction.”
His co-star Amber Marshall, who played Amy, fully supported his choice. She noted that he handled his departure with total respect for the cast and crew. Graham even shared a heartfelt video message to fans, thanking them for supporting him over the years.
Since leaving Heartland, Graham stepped away from full-time acting to focus on his podcast, Time Has Come. The show focuses on life changes, personal growth, and spirituality—even featuring guest appearances from some of his former Heartland co-stars.
How Heartland Handled Amy’s Grief
Instead of pretending everything was fine after a few episodes, the writers took Amy’s loss seriously.
Season 14 picks up a year after Ty’s death, but Amy is still struggling to move forward. The dream home they were building together still sits unfinished—a heartbreaking physical reminder of the future they lost.

One of the best moments comes from a quiet conversation between Amy and her grandfather, Jack Bartlett. He tells her: “You never really stop missing someone. But remembering them with love — that’s how you move forward.” The show didn’t rush Amy’s healing, giving fans time to grieve Ty right alongside her.
Ty Borden’s Lasting Mark on the Show

Even though Graham Wardle is no longer on the ranch, Ty’s presence hasn’t disappeared. You can see him in his young daughter, Lyndy, and in the way the family leans on each other.
Ty’s death changed the DNA of Heartland. The show grew up, leaning into real, messy emotions that don’t always have simple answers. For a long-running family drama, choosing truth over an easy happy ending was a brave move—and it made Ty’s story impossible to forget.

I love heartland, when the died it broke my heart, I was hoping he wouldn’t. We never seen it coming. I have watched all episodes at least twice some more. One of the best running shows ever. Touches on so many true issues we all face everyday. Jack is amazing, Amy is the best. Can’t forget Mallory, she makes me laugh. Georgie is amazing too, her attitude reminds me of my sister. I pray they keep going on for a long time. I’ve laughed and I’ve cried watching it. When the horses die on the show, it breaks my heart and when remmy passed, I thought I’d never stop crying.
The show just isn’t the same without Ty. Ty and Amy were suppose to grow old together. Season 19 shouldn’t be the last season. You have one more season to let them grow more with each other.
I’ve been watching heartland since 2014-2015 I love the show so much I’ve watched it from season 1 all over again every year and yeah I was upset when ty died but I still watch it plus it was sad to when they killed is character off the way they did but the show is still good and I love it still can’t wait to see if there will be a season 19 they all did great in there parts of plying there character’s
I love the program with Ty the story was great ! But he choose to move on and that is okay too! But i think Nathan is really good replacement , I hope they grow together as a family and the story will go on !
I know Ty won’t b back but i really miss seeeing him on the show hes forever in. My ❤️
The love story between Amy and Ty is not replicated ever.! I wish Ty was mentioned more in future episodes with his daughter,Lyndy. I believe Ty’s memory should be mentioned in future episodes in Heartland. Heartland will always be Ty Amy and Lyndy for me. PawT
I agree. There have only been one or two episodes where Amy is helping Lyndy deal with the loss of her father, or helping her remember him. There have been opportunities like her first day of school where he could have beenmentioned or remembered but the writers have chosen to focus on Amy’s pursuit of a new man. I don’t know from experience but I can imagine that when you have a love as deep and strong as Amy had with Ty, it might take a little longer to move on.
I will never get over the Death of Ty, it has changed the whole show for me, I still watch but don’t like the idea of Amy sleeping with someone else, they Ty and Amy were the truest of LOVE STORIES we have every had-on TV!!
I loved Heartland and it not the same with out Ty being there with Amy they were. The greatest couple . So I just don’t want her seeing anyone else besides Ty because it’s wouldn’t be the same.
