Shaun Johnston: From Runway Model to Heartland’s Jack Bartlett

Before the ranch, he had a very different job

Shaun Johnston didn’t need a script when his horse died on screen. When the pages for the ninth season of Heartland hit his desk, he didn’t scribble notes or rehearse a tearful monologue. He just let out a breath.

Most actors treat a character’s grief like a technical exercise in crying. Johnston knew that saying goodbye to Paint wasn’t about acting. It was about being real.

“Film is a permanent record of every mistake you ever make, which is why it’s terrifying compared to the stage.”

Life Before the Heartland Ranch

Long before he put on Jack Bartlett’s cowboy hat, Johnston was heading down a very different road: accounting.

At twenty years old, he packed into a 1973 Cutlass Supreme to get away from a desk job. At 6’3″, he found work as a high-fashion runway model in Toronto, pulling in sixty dollars an hour. If you only know him in boots and denim, it’s funny to picture him walking under runway lights—but that was his day-to-day life back then.

Johnston cut his teeth in live theater, and he still talks about the stage with pure love. To him, the stage always felt safe. If you mess up a line in a play, the mistake disappears into the air the second the curtain drops.

Television is completely different. It keeps a permanent record. Every bad delivery or awkward pause is preserved forever. That pressure used to weigh on him, but over time, it taught him to stop micromanaging his performance. Instead, he learned to trust quiet, natural pauses.

Playing the same character for over a decade can easily turn an actor into a generic, grumpy old man. But Johnston never let that happen. He uses Jack to show what aging honestly looks like. He doesn’t try to hide his gray hair or chase Hollywood’s obsession with staying young forever. When he’s not on set, he plays hockey, picks up an acoustic guitar, and performs live shows for small crowds across rural Alberta.

Like almost every working actor, he spent years stressing about whether the phone would ring or if the show would get renewed for another season.

Eventually, Johnston just let that anxiety go. The show would either come back or it wouldn’t. Either way, he had found his rhythm. He’s steady, he’s human, and best of all, he has completely stopped trying to be perfect.

I love Heartland better than any show I have ever seen. Jack makes the show. Without him it wouldn’t be a show. He is so true to his part it makes it believable. I love all of the characters but Jack is the heart and soul of it. Amy plays such a good part also. Her way with the horses makes it real also. She’s such a good actress. Her demeanor never changes. She’s always the same and true to herself. I love Caleb also. He’s so funny but has such a good heart. I wish he would find real love on the show. He’s so good with his son. I’m talking as if this is real life but they make it seem that way. I hope it continues on. ❤️❤️
