If you’re a Heartland fan, Season 14 was tough to watch. After following the series for well over a decade, viewers were hit with the biggest shock in the show’s history: Ty Borden died.
It wasn’t a temporary break or an off-screen trip—Ty was gone for good.
It’s true that all good things eventually come to an end. But for many fans, one big question remains: did the writers make the right call?
Ty and Amy: The Heart of the Show
Ty and Amy’s relationship was the core of Heartland since the first episode in 2007. Fans spent years invested in their story. We watched them go through breakups, outside drama (remember Kit, Chase, Blair, and Ahmed?), and plenty of close calls.
No matter what happened, they always found their way back to each other.
When they finally built a stable life together—getting married, welcoming baby Lyndy, and running their business—it felt earned. It was the happy ending fans had waited over a decade to see. Having that taken away so suddenly felt like a gut punch.
The End of an Era?
To be fair, the decision wasn’t entirely in the writers’ hands. Graham Wardle, who played Ty, decided it was time to move on after 14 years. Spending that long on one show is rare, and it makes sense that he wanted to try new things.

Still, was killing off Ty the best solution?
Ty had one of the best character arcs on television. He started as a troubled kid on probation and grew into a skilled vet, a devoted husband, and a loving father. To wipe all of that away with a sudden death felt harsh. Instead of giving his character a respectful farewell, it felt like a cruel shortcut.
Can Heartland Work Without Ty?
Moving forward without Ty leaves a massive hole in the series. Amy is left raising Lyndy alone, and the dynamic on the ranch feels completely different.
While the rest of the cast is fantastic, Ty brought a balance to the story that is hard to replace. Without him, the show risks losing the spark that kept fans hooked for so many years.
Did the show make the right choice? For many fans, the answer is no. Instead of killing off a core character to keep the series running, Heartland might have been better off ending on a high note while the family was whole.
The show will try to build a new rhythm, but it won’t ever be quite the same.
