If you watched NCIS, you knew Gibbs. He did not talk much. He hated shortcuts. He expected everyone in the room to do the job right.
Mark Harmon played him from the 2003 premiere through the fourth episode of season 19, in October 2021, then stayed on as a producer. Gibbs never felt like a character someone had dreamed up. The reason sits in the house Harmon grew up in, and he has been careful not to oversell it.
His father, Tom Harmon, was already famous. He won the Heisman Trophy at Michigan in 1940, flew for the Army Air Forces in World War II, and later worked as a sports broadcaster. Mark did not describe a glamorous childhood. He described a man who kept things plain.
In a 2019 People interview, he put one lesson in a single line. “My dad taught me, if it’s not true, don’t worry about it.”

That is Mark remembering his father, not a line Tom left on tape. It still sounds like Gibbs. On the show, rule No. 3 is “Don’t believe what you’re told. Double-check.” Rule No. 15 is “Always work as a team.” From another actor, those could have landed like slogans. From Harmon, they landed like habits he already had.
In that same interview he said, “I come from working stock, and I’m proud of that. You have to get up every day and just try hard.” He has put the job in even fewer words. “Do the work. And do it with pride.” Another lesson he has credited to his father: work your ass off, and don’t let the effort show.
He has not said Gibbs was his dad. In 2012 he said the character was “based on three very real people I met,” the kind of pieces an actor steals and builds into a part. He was talking about people he had met through the job, not about Tom. What a USA Today writer noticed, reading the People interview, was how much the advice sounded like it belonged on Gibbs’s list.
That is the right size for the story. Gibbs was not a secret portrait of Tom Harmon. Harmon just already knew the man who says little, keeps a code, and does not turn the work into a performance. His father had raised him that way.
Gibbs could be cold. He could keep people out. Fans still recognized him, because he felt like someone they had already met. Harmon did not make that bigger than it was.
He just did the work.

Love watching Gibbs acting on NCIS. He does it all so well and amazingly it appears to come easily to him. I love the good values that are displayed by all the actors and actresses on the show. It is one of the few TV shows anywhere that shows a moral compass in every show. It’s one of the few shows that is worth watching and following. I just miss seeing Gibbs in the leading role. A cameo now and then would suffice … hint hint!
