“He Was a Stud. He Still Is.”: Bridget Moynahan on Tom Selleck

When asked about Tom Selleck’s classic Magnum, P.I. days, Bridget Moynahan did not hesitate.

“I did watch Magnum. He was a stud. He still is—that’s the thing,” she said with a laugh during an appearance on Access Live.

But as for his famous mustache? Moynahan joked, “I don’t talk about his mustache. I put my foot down about that.”

For nearly a decade, Moynahan has starred alongside Selleck on the CBS drama Blue Bloods, playing Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan. Over the seasons, the show’s weekly family dinner scenes have become a fan favorite. According to Moynahan, the warmth viewers see on screen is genuine. “It really does feel like family,” she shared.

Selleck, now 74, has lived a relatively quiet life off-screen. He has been married to actress Jillie Mack since 1987 and spends his time raising horses on his California ranch. Aside from a minor water dispute during a drought in 2015—which was quickly settled—he has kept his name out of the tabloids. Moynahan compared Selleck’s quiet, steady presence to that of Sam Elliott, describing them both as classic actors who have aged with grace.

While Moynahan was happy to praise her on-screen father, she was also promoting her book, Our Shoes, Ourselves. The book is a collection of personal essays from 40 women, each focusing on a meaningful pair of shoes. Contributors include Katie Couric, who writes about her first big footwear purchase after landing a major TV job, and Barbara Bush, who shares a story about wearing mismatched Keds.

Moynahan’s own essay in the book is highly personal. She writes about a pair of motorcycle boots she bought during a difficult, highly publicized period in her life—the time surrounding her breakup with NFL quarterback Tom Brady and her subsequent pregnancy.

While she does not name Brady directly in the book, she describes the stressful feeling of being constantly watched by the public and struggling to find her footing. Buying the boots, she said, gave her a sense of control and comfort.

“Finding those boots made me feel like I was taking a little piece of myself back,” she said.

The book’s theme is straightforward: while men might remember significant moments in their lives through cars or sports, many women associate key memories with the shoes they were wearing. For Moynahan, those boots did not solve her problems, but they gave her the confidence to face them.

“I may not remember the outfits,” Moynahan said. “But I remember the shoes.”
