They were at Nobu in Malibu on July 16 — one of those California evenings where the light stays golden longer than it should. Pierce Brosnan, 73, and his wife Keely, 62, left the restaurant smiling, and Brosnan turned toward the cameras long enough to flash a hang loose sign before they moved on.

It was a small gesture. It was also, somehow, completely him.

The couple married in 2001 after seven years together. They have two sons — Dylan, 29, and Paris, 25. Brosnan also has three older children from his marriage to actress Cassandra Harris: sons Christopher, 53, and Sean, 42, and a daughter, Charlotte, who died in 2013 from the same ovarian cancer that took her mother in 1991. Brosnan has never been guarded about how much that loss shaped him, or about how much Keely’s steadiness has meant in the years since.

“We like each other a lot. We love each other a lot,” he told Fox News in 2023. “And we’ve been down the road, and we’ve seen many, many hardships — as families do, as we all do.”

He called the marriage “a spiritual journey” and credited Keely with giving him the freedom to pursue his career without ever making him feel he had taken it for granted. “She allows me to go out into the wild blue yonder and do what I do as a man, as an actor,” he said. “Keely is a journalist, a reporter. She’s an artist in her own right. And as a woman, she has made a family for our sons.”

Keely has kept a lower public profile than her husband — by design, it seems, rather than circumstance. She is a former entertainment correspondent and environmental activist who has written and produced documentary work on ocean conservation. The ranch life, the causes, the relative distance from the Hollywood circuit — none of it reads like branding. It reads like a person with a clear idea of what she values.

In 2022, the two told PEOPLE what they believed had kept them together across three decades. Brosnan’s answer: “Solving problems day in, year after year, liking each other, getting on with each other.”

Keely’s was shorter. “Being best friends,” she said.

Thursday night at Nobu, they looked exactly like that.
