3 Heartland Actors Who Live the Ranch Life

Most TV cowboys have never touched a horse before their first costume fitting. Heartland is a little different.
The show has run for over 20 seasons, which is an absurd lifespan for any drama, let alone one set on an Alberta cattle ranch. Part of why it works — and superfans will tell you this right away — is that the riding looks real. In several cases, it is real.
Amber Marshall (Amy Fleming)
Amber Marshall has been on a horse since she was four. She bought her first one at ten. By the time she auditioned for Heartland, she wasn't learning a skill for the role — she was simply showing up as herself.
Her character Amy is the show’s horse whisperer. Amber has said on the official Heartland blog that she and Amy have become almost the same person over the years. She lives on a 100-acre ranch in southern Alberta with horses, cattle, dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, and even an alpaca. Her dog Remi plays Georgie’s dog on the show, and her miniature horse Talon appeared as Monty.

Eventually, the difference between the actress and the character didn't matter much.
Alisha Newton (Georgie Fleming-Morris)
Alisha Newton grew up on screen — she joined Heartland as a child — but she also grew up riding. Her grandparents owned a farm, and the show itself got her more involved in horse competitions.

She became interested in show-jumping while filming and started competing professionally. Newton told Heels Down Magazine that balancing acting and competitive riding is hard, but she manages it.
And because she’s truly skilled, she does most of her own stunts. When you see Georgie clearing high jumps, that’s usually Alisha. She’s even given riding tips to her co-stars because she really knows her stuff.
Shaun Johnston (Grandpa Jack)
Shaun Johnston grew up on a working cattle ranch in Alberta. So when he was cast as the gruff patriarch who’s spent his life on the land, nobody had to teach him how to sit a horse — he already belonged there.

He also shares Jack's love for music — Johnston is a singer-songwriter and has written some of the songs Jack performs on the show. That detail shows how this casting happened.
Here’s a bit of trivia fans like: the mustache started as a prop — fake in the early seasons — until Johnston grew a real one. He also says Jack is the only character who’s never been thrown from a horse. Given his ranch upbringing, that’s both impressive and completely expected.
The reason Heartland has lasted so long isn’t complicated. A ranch drama where the lead actors can actually ride is rare — and audiences notice, even if they can’t quite explain why it feels so real.
