Amber Marshall on Season 12 of Heartland: Balancing Parenthood, Horses, and a Love Story Fans Still Want More Of

Amy and Ty Finally Get Their Dream Partnership
Amber Marshall, who’s played Amy Fleming since the very first episode of Heartland, says Season 12 delivers something fans have wanted for years: Amy and Ty finally working together as a team.
“We’ve heard from so many people saying, ‘We want more Amy and Ty moments,’ and they’re going to get that wish this year,” Amber told CBC’s The Homestretch.
This time, Amy and Ty aren’t just juggling life as parents—they’re also combining their professional worlds. Ty has his veterinary work, Amy has her equine expertise, and now they bring those skills together. “It’s a whole new dynamic,” Amber said. “It was fun for us to play, because we’ve always seen him in the vet clinic and me at the ranch. Now those worlds finally collide.”
Horses, Kids, and the Chaos That Keeps the Show Fresh
Working on Heartland means working with two unpredictable elements: kids and animals. For Amber, that’s what keeps it fun.
“If I ever do other projects, they’ll feel easy,” she laughed. “We’re so used to juggling everything on Heartland. Horses go their own way, kids start chatting mid-scene—it forces you to stay in the moment.”
Season 12 adds even more energy, thanks to the young twins who play Lyndy. “Everything you say to them, they take as truth. If you say, ‘Let’s go get a snack,’ the next thing you know, they’re asking for that snack. It keeps things fun and spontaneous.”
Drama, Horses, and Disagreements
Of course, it wouldn’t be Heartland without drama. “It’s a family show, but it’s still a drama—there’s always going to be tragedy somewhere,” Amber explained.
One of the big storylines this season takes Amy and Ty into the horse racing world. “It’s really interesting because they don’t always agree on the best way to treat a horse,” she said. “Amy’s more holistic, Ty’s more textbook. That tension adds a new layer.”
Growing Up On and Off Screen
Amber started the series as a teenager. Now she’s a producer, a wife, and living her own ranch life off-screen. “My character and I have grown up together,” she said. “Everything that happens in my personal life seems to relate to Amy, and I get to bring those experiences into the show.”
Living on a ranch also feeds story ideas. “Sometimes I’ll tell the writers about something that happened at home, and it’ll end up in an episode,” she said.
Global Fans, Local Pride
Heartland airs in more than 120 countries, and fans often stop Amber no matter where she travels. “It’s incredible to hear people say they grew up with my character,” she said. “It’s also amazing for Alberta. People see how beautiful it is and actually travel here because of the show.”
How Long Will She Stay?
Amber says she’s not planning to leave anytime soon. “I could probably do the show forever. I love Alberta, I love being here, and my life is so similar to Amy’s—it just fits.”
The cast and crew also feel like family. “We get along so well, which is rare in any work environment, especially after so many years. It’s just incredible.”
Bottom Line: Season 12 of Heartland promises exactly what fans have been asking for—more Amy and Ty moments, deeper family dynamics, and even a few surprises along the way. And for Amber Marshall, that’s exactly where she wants to be.
