No Matter How Ridiculous the Plot Gets, These ‘Yellowstone’ Episodes Never Get Old

Ranking the five standout hours that show the Duttons at their absolute best.

Yellowstone can be ridiculous. Plot holes swallow cattle trailers, and the Duttons skate past crimes that would bury anyone else. When Taylor Sheridan’s modern Western locks in, though, it’s still addictive TV — big scenery, worse people, and Rip Wheeler ending someone’s afternoon.

You don’t need a full-season binge. Sometimes you want one hour. Here are five of the most rewatchable episodes in the series, ranked.

Spoilers ahead for seasons 2–5.

5. “Half the Money” (Season 4, Episode 1)

Season 3 ended with John shot on the roadside, Beth walking out of a bombed office, and Kayce trading gunfire at home. The Season 4 opener doesn’t pause for a recap — it drops you back into the wreckage.

What makes it rewatchable is the rare sense that the Duttons can actually bleed. They’re not mythic ranch gods here; they’re scrambling. Then Rip goes looking for answers and ruins a fly-fishing trip with a cooler full of rattlesnake. Loud, mean, and weirdly inventive — peak Yellowstone vengeance.

4. “Sins of the Father” (Season 2, Episode 10)

Yes, the Beck brothers arc includes that airplane bomb the show basically orphans. Ignore it for an hour. This finale still delivers the series’ best shootout.

Kayce’s son Tate has been taken. What follows isn’t paperwork — it’s John, Kayce, and Rip cutting a path through the people who took him. From a kill that catches a man mid-bathroom to pulling Tate out of a closet, the episode stays dark and relentless. Awful people get what’s coming. Rewatch fuel.

3. “A Thundering” (Season 2, Episode 1)

If someone asks what Yellowstone is, hand them this.

Jamie is already mid-identity spiral. John is coughing blood from an ulcer in a scene so operatic you almost laugh. Then comes the bar fight: out-of-towners pick on the ranch hands, and Rip’s solution is to back a trailer up to the door and unload an angry bull into the room. Chaotic, funny, excessive — and reportedly lifted from real cowboy lore. The show in one bottle.

2. “Resurrection Day” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Most weeks, the Duttons treat each other like enemies with the same last name. Every so often, the show remembers they’re still family.

Jamie hits bottom after killing a reporter to protect his father’s secrets. He takes a rifle into a field planning to end it. John finds him, takes the gun, and says they’ll figure it out. No chase, no train station — just Wes Bentley and Kevin Costner in the dirt with the mess they’ve made. It hits hard, and it steadies the series before the next round of bullets.

1. “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow and You” (Season 5, Episode 6)

For a show built on shootouts and shallow graves, the best rewatch is its quietest hour.

Boardrooms and political schemes get parked. The crew heads into the high country for a real multi-day cattle drive. Rip takes Beth to an open meadow — a simple date that shows why they work. That night, old cowboy Emmett Walsh dies in his sleep under the stars. John doesn’t dress it up with empty comfort. He says Emmett died on the trail, “like every cowboy dreams it.”

Montana looks staggering. The vanishing cowboy life gets an honest sendoff. And for once you can sit with these characters without waiting for the next ambush. Put this on when you want Yellowstone without the noise.

Five episodes, five moods — vengeance, rescue, chaos, grace, and open sky. Pick one tonight and skip the full rewatch spiral.
