Mark Harmon’s Real-Life Gibbs: How His Dad Shaped the Man Behind the Role

Mark Harmon didn’t have to imagine Gibbs—he just followed his father’s advice.
For NCIS fans, Leroy Jethro Gibbs is more than just a character. He’s steady, honest, and tough in all the right ways. But what many people don’t realize is that the man playing him—Mark Harmon—was raised by someone who lived by a very similar code: his father, Tom Harmon.
In an interview with People, Mark shared a line his dad told him years ago that never left him:
“If it’s not true, don’t worry about it.”
Simple? Yes. But for Mark, it became a way of life—both on and off camera.
Tom Harmon Wasn’t Just a Dad—He Was a War Hero
Tom Harmon was a legend long before his son ever stepped onto a film set. He won the Heisman Trophy as a football star at the University of Michigan, survived two plane crashes in WWII, and came home a decorated war hero.
But none of that turned into ego at home.
Mark and his two sisters were raised with discipline, not privilege. No red carpets. No shortcuts. Just hard work and respect.
“I come from working stock,” Mark once said.
“You wake up, try hard, and keep going.”
“Gibbs’ Rules? They Sound a Lot Like Dad’s

Longtime NCIS fans know Gibbs has a set of rules—little nuggets of wisdom he lives by. But look closely, and you’ll notice something interesting:
Gibbs Rule | Tom Harmon Wisdom |
---|---|
Rule #3: “Don’t believe what you’re told. Double-check.” | “If it’s not true, don’t waste a breath on it.” |
Rule #7: “Always be specific when you lie.” | Tell the truth—it saves time. |
Rule #15: “Always work as a team.” | Respect everyone in the huddle—titles don’t win games. |
Even if Mark didn’t write these rules himself, you can hear his dad’s voice in every one of them.
Fame Didn’t Define Him. Values Did.
Mark Harmon could’ve gone Hollywood. But he didn’t. No scandals, no spotlight-chasing—just early mornings, steady work, and family weekends spent watching baseball.
“You prepare. You put the time in,” he said.
“There are no little things. Everything matters.”
That’s not a soundbite. That’s Tom Harmon talking through his son.

Why Mark Harmon’s Story Feels So Familiar
A lot of us had someone growing up—a parent, a grandparent, a coach—who taught us to keep our word, show up, and treat people with decency. For Mark Harmon, that person was his father.
And maybe that’s why Gibbs felt so real.
“Work your ass off—and don’t make it look like effort,” Mark once said.
“Treat people the same, no matter who they are.”
It’s the kind of advice you don’t just follow. You live by it.

From the football field to a Hollywood set, the same rules apply: Be honest. Work hard. Stay grounded.

Love watching Gibbs acting on NCIS. He does it all so well and amazingly it appears to come easily to him. I love the good values that are displayed by all the actors and actresses on the show. It is one of the few TV shows anywhere that shows a moral compass in every show. It’s one of the few shows that is worth watching and following. I just miss seeing Gibbs in the leading role. A cameo now and then would suffice … hint hint!
